The Fifth World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly

On Sunday, July 27, the fifth World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly takes place. Pope Francis has also set the theme: "Blessed is the one who has not lost hope."

Pastoral Letter

Our bishops have written a Pastoral Letter for this occasion - read it here.

Pope Leo XIV issued a message.

The message from Pope Leo XIV can be found on the pages of církev.cz.

The message from Pope Leo XIV can also be found on the pages of Vatican news.

You can read the complete message in the Czech translation here.

Jubilee Indulgences

The Pope also reminds us of the possibility of gaining jubilee indulgences: "Those who cannot participate in the pilgrimage to Rome can obtain jubilee indulgences this year by visiting lonely elderly people, ... as if they were traveling to Christ present in them" (cf. Mt 25: 34 – 36). "Visiting an elderly person is a way to meet Jesus, who frees us from indifference and loneliness."

We thank all seniors for your selfless service, your witness of faith and prayers in families, in social life among people, and in the parish.

Saint Father Leo XIV, in his message for the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, writes: "The good that we wish for our loved ones – the spouse with whom we have spent most of our lives, the children, grandchildren, who brighten our days – does not disappear when our strength weakens. On the contrary, it is often precisely their love that awakens our strength and brings us hope and comfort." He encourages elderly people to live with hope even in their fragility: "Even though our body is weak, nothing can prevent us from loving, praying, sacrificing, and being shining signs of hope for one another."

"We have the freedom that no difficulty can take away from us: the freedom to love and to pray. All of us, always, can love and pray," writes the Pope, ending with encouragement: "Especially in old age, let us remain with trust in the Lord. Let us be renewed each day by meeting Him in prayer and at the Holy Mass. With love, let us pass on the faith that we have lived for years in our families and in our daily encounters. Let us always praise God for His goodness, cultivate unity with our loved ones, and open our hearts to those who are distant, especially those who live in need. We will be a sign of hope at every age."
